This picture is dedicated to the few dozen passengers (me included) on the Central train between Crewe and Stafford on February 11th 2003. We hit a pheasant, destroying the pneumatic brake cabling, causing the train to grind to a sudden halt. We were then stuck in the middle of nowhere for three hours while the train was repaired (it wasn't possible to move us to a replacement). Thank God we all had something to read, and that there were no screaming kids in the carriage.
This was the view out my window; I've now become too familiar with the two pairs of bushes in the middle distance, and that slight kink in the stream on the right. I'll never be able to go past here again now without thinking of that bloody afternoon. So this page is my way of sharing the misery: just imagine looking at this for three hours. Better yet, trespass on the Crewe-Stafford line, just north of the M6 by Junction 14, and look at it for real (just don't blame me when you get prosecuted or end up like the pheasant).
I feel like putting a plaque there saying something witty and yet poignant, like "Aaagh!".
